Fair Begins Here

Fair Begins Here

Our theme at peace Hub for Spring 2024 is: Who We Are.

How we treat refugees reflects who we are. At our best, we are welcoming and kind to those facing difficult times. If any one of us feared for our lives or the lives of our loved ones, we’d want to know that others would help us to safety.

Unfortunately, Britain’s refugee system has become ever-more uncaring, chaotic and costly.

Our government is still trying to banish people fleeing persecution to Rwanda, despite the Supreme Court ruling the scheme unlawful. Tens of thousands of people are stuck in limbo waiting for their cases to be processed, separated from their families and barred from working.

Given the chance, we know communities across our country go the extra mile to welcome refugees – opening their homes, volunteering, speaking up, donating. And, given the chance, refugees do so much to enrich our society as they build new lives.

What could a fairer approach look like?

Together With Refugees is calling for:

  • Protection for people fleeing war and persecution by upholding the UK’s commitment under international law to the right to claim asylum and by scrapping the Rwanda scheme.
  • A proper strategy for welcoming refugees by ensuring fair, rapid decisions on their application for asylum, and the chance to rebuild their lives through settling in a community, being allowed to work and the chance to learn English.
  • Stronger global cooperation to tackle the root causes that force people to flee their homes and provides positive solutions when they do, including through safe routes to refugee protection.

Pop into Peace Hub throughout February, March & April to find out more, share your thoughts and take action to support the Fair Begins Here campaign.
