Refugee week begins this coming Monday – and there are lots of ways to get involved!
Refugee Week happens across the UK every June: throughout the week there are arts, cultural and educational events and activities that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK and promote better understanding of why people seek sanctuary.
There are events happening in Birmingham and across the West Midlands from 15-21 June, including music, exhibitons and film.
The grand finale is the Celebrating Sanctuary Festival, Sunday 21st June 2-8pm at Midlands Arts Centre. This is a free event for all the family with workshops, activities and live performances, including:
- Kadialy Kouyate – From a great line of Kouyate griots in Senegal, Kadialy’s spellbinding blend of kora and voice has been welcomed in many prestigious venues around the world.
- The Redeemed – Birmingham- based group with members hailing from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their music reflects their heritage and creates a beautiful and soulful performance.
- Harare – fronted by the exuberance and charisma of Zimbabwean singer and marimbist Kudaushe Matimba.
- Hassan Salih Nour – Sudanese singer and musician – a talented and captivating performer.
