Looking forward to May

Looking forward to May

There are 2 great opportunities to celebrate LGBT culture and stand up for equality this May:

17th May: International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia (IDAHOT)

It’s a day to celebrate the ways that LGBT people contribute to our community, and stand up for LGBT equality.

The theme for 2017 is Love Makes a Family:

  • Celebrating the great diversity of families in our society.
  • Supporting LGBT people whose families reject or abuse them.
  • Supporting the families of LGBT people to understand their needs.
  • Supporting rainbow families against discrimination in the law and in society.

The video above features some (adorable!) children talking about their rainbow families, and there are a host of other videos on this theme on the IDAHOT website.

27th & 28th May: Birmingham Pride

Birmingham Pride is an opportunity to celebrate LBGT people and culture in our local community.  Pride began as an act of defiance against hatred and discrimination, and is now a celebration of equality and diversity.

The theme for 2017 is Love & Pride, marking the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK.  This was a major step in the journey towards LGBT equality, which continues today.

There is a wide range of music and entertainment throughout the weekend: who said that taking action for peace & justice can’t be fun?

Watch this space for more info about how you can take part in these events.  And you can always pop into Peace Hub to find out more and get ideas.
